Start with the certifier the recipient actually requires
In Thailand, the relevant professional framework is that of a Notarial Services Attorney under the Lawyers Council of Thailand. The familiar label “notary” does not establish that this professional has the same powers as every overseas Notary Public. Jurisdiction, certificate wording and recipient requirements must be considered together.
Read the receiving organisation’s form before choosing an appointment. It may name a particular professional, require a specific jurisdiction or ask for a consular officer. Ask whether a Thai attorney’s certification is acceptable rather than assuming that any document carrying a stamp will qualify. This article does not certify the credentials of an individual practitioner.
Identify the act, not just the stamp
Witnessing a signature concerns the person signing and the signing event. Certifying a copy concerns comparison with the original presented. Neither should be read as a guarantee that every statement in the document is true. A translation certificate addresses another question: responsibility for the translated text. Witnessing the translator’s signature is not automatically a review of translation accuracy.
An illustrative example, not a client result: a recipient asks for a certified copy of a passport, while the applicant supplies only a witnessed signature on a translation. The latter may not satisfy the request. Clarifying the intended act before work begins can prevent ordering the wrong certificate.
Check the practitioner and appointment requirements
Request the actual practitioner’s name and the information needed to confirm the relevant registration. The Lawyers Council’s registration page includes renewal procedures; a company logo or photograph of a seal is not proof that a named person’s status remains current. Staff should confirm who will undertake the work and what supporting documents they need.
Do not sign in advance when the act requires signing in the practitioner’s presence. For corporate documents, establish both the signatory’s identity and authority to represent the entity. A personal identity document alone does not answer the corporate-authority question.
Inspect the returned document before dispatch
Check names, dates, page numbering, attachments and the scope of the certificate against the agreed instructions. Keep track of which version was reviewed. A later amendment may affect the certificate; ask the certifier before altering wording, inserting a replacement page or attaching material that was not presented during the appointment.
If a form contains blanks or unfamiliar wording, resolve them before signing rather than relying on the stamp to correct an incomplete submission. Keep the recipient’s written instructions with your file so that the completed work can be checked against a concrete requirement.
Overseas use is a separate decision
Thailand deposited its instrument of accession to the 1961 Apostille Convention on 2026-06-30, and the Convention enters into force for Thailand on 28 February 2027. Before that date, a Thai apostille cannot replace required authentication. Confirm whether the recipient requires translation, consular legalisation or another certificate; not every document needs notarisation or embassy authentication.
Ask whether the recipient requires translation, MFA legalisation, embassy authentication or another certification. There is no universal sequence that every document must follow. After treaty commencement, document scope and applicability between the countries involved still need checking; destination membership alone is not an acceptance decision.
Request a scoped quotation from staff
Provide the document type, page count, purpose, destination and recipient instructions. Company service prices are not displayed here. Ask staff for a quotation that separates the agreed certification work, any translation and any additional coordination, rather than ordering an unspecified all-purpose package.
Check any government fee with the responsible authority before submission. No unverified fee figure is stated in this guide. The two confirmed offices are Bangkok, Lat Phrao 95, and Khon Kaen, Na Mueang Road. Arrange the appointment and required originals with staff before travelling.
